NEW DELHI: BJP MP Ram Jethmalani has written a scathing letter to party president Nitin Gadkari and other senior party leaders, questioning the state of affairs in the party, and exhorting the party to play a more pro-active role, as main Opposition party. Jethmalani told the Express that he wanted the letter to be read out at the Mumbai national executive, “a reason why he gave the letter to Gadkari on May 23”.“I presume you are concerned about the sickness of our party which registers no response to the even greater sickness of the ruling party,” says Jethmalani in his letter, which is also addressed to BJP brass, besides Gadkari.Jethmalani basically makes two points in the letter — he believes that “half the present Cabinet should be in jail for various corrupt practices” and the BJP, by virtue of being the main Opposition party, should take to the streets to build public opinion against the incumbent government. His problem with the BJP, however, is that he thinks that party leaders are instead busy “pulling each other down”.“Tongue-tied leaders are busy pulling down one another and creating an unmistakable impression that they are suffering from some inexplicable inertia and paralysis,” he says in the letter. “Is it not true that there is hostility between Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley? Are there not people up against Narendra Modi,” Jethmalani later told Express.Jethmalani’s second point in the letter is that the party should have announced a name for the Presidential elections, especially when the name of Pranab Mukherjee (who, according to him, is a “guardian of the stolen wealth of the nation and a protector of grand dacoits”) is doing the rounds for the post.“Believe me, the nation is not wrong in concluding that we too have skeletons in our cupboards…,” Jethmalani warns in the letter.
