The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday welcomed Union minister Jairam Ramesh's letter to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on increasing seats in the Jharkhand Assembly, but the BJP termed it as belated .
"It is a welcome initiative. The Congress in Jharkhand has always demanded an increase in the current House strength to provide stability and good governance," PCC spokesman Sailesh Sinha said.
Appreciating Ramesh's recent letter to Shinde urging him to reconsider the strength of the Assembly based on population, Sinha suggested that the strength should be doubled from the present 81 elected members and one nominated.
BJP leader and former deputy Chief Minister Raghuvar Das said the state Assembly had several years ago passed two resolutions demanding an increase in the strength.
"Jairam Ramesh's action is belated and taken to hoodwink the people of the state as elections are nearing. If he is so serious, he should ensure it passed by the Union cabinet at the earliest instead of writing letters," Das said. In his letter Ramesh reportedly said the seats should be increased based on population.
