New Delhi: For over seven years, three women, a mother and her two daughters, were allegedly locked up in a house with no electricity by the family patriarch.
The man allegedly chained the women to pieces of furniture in their Vasai home in Mumbai.
Neighbors and NGO workers were in a state of shock after seeing the women’s plight.
“When we rescued them, the condition of the house was deplorable. The stench was so strong that we couldn't stand there even after covering our faces with handkerchief,” an NGO worker Gopal Krishnan said.
Rescue workers say when they entered the house, the mother begged to be taken away but the man denies he mistreated his family.
"If I have done any such thing then let them come in front of me and say it,” he said.
The horrifying story of these women came to light after one of the daughters escaped earlier this year.
When rescue workers entered the house the stench was appalling. The windows were boarded up, the living room and kitchen were in a mess. Even the refrigerator was locked with a chain. Neighbours say the man was possessive of the girls and never allowed them to go out or speak to anyone.
“We never saw the girls going out,” a neighbour said.
The man has been reportedly unemployed for the last 15 years. But it is believed that he used to leave the house every morning after cutting off the power supply.
When confronted, the man had no clear answers.
The three women have been taken to a local hospital for psychiatric treatment while the man is in police custody.
