Mumbai: After a 19-year-old youth, who was injured during Maharashtra bandh, succumbed at government-run JJ Hospital here, Navi Mumbai police registered a case against unknown people for murder and rioting.
Rohan Todkar was injured in the violence during the Maratha quota stir in adjoining Navi Mumbai. He was admitted to Navi Mumbai Corporation hospital on Wednesday evening. However, due to deteriorating health condition, he was shifted to JJ Hosoital.
"The victim had head injury and multiple limb injuries. He died at around 10:30am on Thursday. Postmortem was carried out at 8:45pm," said Dr Sanjay Surase, medical superintendent of JJ Hospital.
The body has been sent to Satara, the native village of the deceased. "We are yet to ascertain if the youth, who died was part of protests, or if he was simply an onlooker," said Hemant Nagrale, commissioner of police of Navi Mumbai.
A case of murder under section 302 of the IPC and rioting has been registered against unknown persons and investigations are being conducted. The police will be investigating if the death was due to shot gun, lathicharge by police or because of stone pelting by the mob.
Eight police officers, 12 constables and over 100 civilians were injured in the violence in Kalamboli junction and Kopar Khairane.
"Agitators turned violent and started pelting stones and torched police vehicles following which police was forced to used lathi charge, tear gas shell and shot gun bullets to control the mob," added Nagrale.
Forty rounds of shotgun, 22 rubber bullets, 42 tear gas shells and 11 tear gas grenades were used to dispose the mob at various locations in Navi Mumbai. Several locals suffered losses and damage to property because of the violence. Internet services were also shut down in the area.
