HYDERABAD: Fifty Shades of Grey, the first novel in an erotic fiction trilogy by new British writer EL James, popularly called Mommy Porn, may have been banned in several libraries in Florida, Wisconsin and Georgia but it has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and emerged as one of the fastest and best-selling series of all time. In the process, it seems to have caught the fancy of book lovers in the city too.Book stores in the city, be it Walden, Landmark, Book Selection Center and Book Point, have sold out all copies of the book available with them. “We had ordered about 30 copies and we are out of stock now. We have placed another order for more copies. The book is doing great and people have been asking for it,” reveals Syed Nazim, Team Leader, Book Section at the Landmark store in Somajiguda.A A Hussain & Co. Book Stores too has almost run out of stock. “Our first stock of 15 copies was sold out. We have ordered another 6 copies, of which we just have one copy left. We do have all the parts of the triology, but the first part has been on demand,” says Asif Hussain, proprietor of the store. The book is priced at Rs 350.The demand for the book in the US is such that on popular demand, a Florida county library had to reverse its decision to ban it and bring back copies to the shelves. But it continues to remain off the shelves in libraries of Harford County, Maryland, and Wisconsin for its S&M scenes. In Baltimore County, for example, nearly 400 copies of the book are out on loan, and there are 1,122 “holds for the book,” The Baltimore Sun reported. The British Library in the city doesn’t have a copy of the book though the writer is from the UK. But it doesn’t seem to have been banned. Should it be banned? Students and bibliophiles in the city are unanimous in their opinion that it shouldn’t be. If you haven’t read the book, you may get to watch the movie for, its film rights have been acquired by Universal Pictures and Focus Features.
