The trial of Saddam Hussein on charges of crimes against humanity over a Shiite massacre began with all eight defendants present.

Baghdad: Iraq's former dictator Saddam Hussein said at the resumption of his trial on Tuesday that he and his seven co-defendants had been on hunger strike for the past three days.

"We have been on a hunger strike for three days," Saddam told the judge in his trial on charges of crimes against humanity as he took his seat in the dock.

The trial of deposed Iraqi dictator on charges of crimes against humanity over a Shiite massacre two decades ago began with all eight defendants present.

Dressed once more in his trademark black business suit, Saddam shouted "God is great" and "long live the great Arab nation" before taking his seat in the dock.

Saddam's half brother and former secret police chief Barzan al-Tikriti entered the court looking very weak and wearing the same, informal pajama-like clothing as Monday's session.

"I sacrifice the blood of my mother and father to the great Baath party," he shouted.
