CHENNAI: The moment one set foot into the SRM University in Kattankulathur on Monday afternoon, it was evident that there were no classes for the day. Clusters of students seemed to be moving all at once, thanks to the boundless amount of energy spread across the campus by the Nokia India Fest 2012. The second edition of this nation-wide talent hunt by Channel V had over 1,500 participants from various city colleges. These included Loyola College, Women's Christian College, Ethiraj College for Women and Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering. Qualifiers from eight regions around the country will be identified for the big ticket to the finale in Goa. First stop: the loudest contest on campus — Launchpad. You know enthusiasm at a competition for rock bands is as hot as the afternoon sun when metal heads get up-front and go on a headbanging spree, full throttle. Now, one might not understand their lyrics, but to tear away from the rock bands is a little difficult. Probably because, albeit amateur talent, it's always entertaining to watch a good band on stage. 'Franks got the Funk' was one of the bands which performed at the event. Those who were to perform later in the evening included popular group Reverse Polarity from Mumbai and Chennai's very own Molotov Cocktail. While a rather skewed debate on whether 'Indian women who don't wax' at a jam session ensued, dancers in black and gold suits hit the stage to the theme of Harry Potter at another event, simple called 'Beat it'. Could 'unpredictable' be the catchword here or 'eclectic'? Perhaps both. It seemed most events had a generous load of takers in the audience. While some students nervously rehearsed their steps before show time, and others chattered about nothing in particular, it was certain that everyone, those competing or 'just chilling', were having a good time. The biggest competition of the fest was without a doubt, the fashion show, Rampage. With Neon bright stilettos, long-flowing dresses and a few ethnic numbers as well, a swarm of students were seen to be milling into the open arena for a glimpse.
