NAMAKKAL: The truck operators have called off their proposed stir to refrain from ferrying goods to Karnataka protesting against an order that makes mandatory the speed governors for all vehicles, both local and those coming from other states, from June 1.According to K Nallathampi, president of the State Federation of Lorry Owners Associations-Tamilnadu (SFLOA-TN), “the proposed protest announced on May 23 that trucks from TN will refrain from operating to Karnataka is called off following a settlement at the talks held by representatives of truck operators in Karnataka with the state government on Thursday.”The SFLOA-TN had issued a warning on May 23 that close to 40,000 trucks that pass through Karnataka would be stopped if the state did not withdraw its order on speed governors stating that fitting the equipment would incur further expenditure.The settlement was reached on Thursday at the negotiations held by a delegation of truck operators, led by the president of the Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association G R Shanmugappa with the Karnataka Transport Minister R Ashok in Bangalore.Talking to Express over phone, Shanmugappa said, “The government agreed to put on hold the order for a period of six months from now.” Moreover, it has consented to revise the heavy life tax imposed on luxury vehicles, he added.The truckers’ leader said that following the assurance from the government of Karnataka, the proposed strike announced by several organisations in the state was called off, while noting that the agreement was reached after four rounds of talks in the last two days.
