In Sanatan Dharma, every festival and fast has been given special importance. One such festival is Vat Savitri. As per the Hindu calendar, the day is marked during the Jyeshtha (Jeth) Amavasya. According to Drik Panchang, this year it falls on Thursday, June 6.
Married women observe fasts for the longevity, happiness and prosperity of their husbands. There is a belief regarding this fast that by observing it, family members are blessed with good fortune and happiness in marital life. In the Vat Savitri fast, both Vat and Savitri are considered to have special importance. The day indicates the important significance of the Banyan tree, which is worshipped on this day in the Hindu religion.
Devotees believe that the three gods reside in the tree: Lord Vishnu in the stem, Lord Shiva in the branches and Brahmadev is believed to reside in the roots. The hanging branches of the banyan tree are considered to be the form of Savitri.
Astrologer Pandit Manoj Shukla told Local18 that the fast of Vat Savitri plays a very important role for women in the Hindu religion. The fast of Vat Savitri is observed on the Amavasya tithi of Krishna Paksha in Jyeshtha month. On this day, married women observe a fast and worship under the banyan tree with rituals for the long lives of their husbands. Women also worship Yamraj and pray for the long and better lives of their husbands.
He further said that if women worship with full rituals on this day, then they get auspicious results. For worship, women can perform Shodashopchar, Panchopacharamand Dashopchar puja under any banyan tree. Additionally, the women, after their puja, give Dakshina to Brahmin and observe the fast for the whole day.
