While the entire nation was busy watching this week’s biggest Bollywood release Pink, which raises issues of violence and discrimination against women, the film’s cast was in the capital to talk about its significance. For those who are yet to watch the film, it has managed to strike a chord with the audience with its real depiction of the prejudices that women are subjected to and their struggle to break gender shackles. From girls being manhandled to being threatened, the film’s director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s portrayal of the ordeal is both compelling and real.
If you experienced threat, shock, lumps in your throat, tears in your eyes, and also heaved a sigh of relief as the film reached its climax, you ought to know that the entire cast, including megastar Amitabh Bachchan has something similar to share. Much like the viewers who found the film emotional, the cast also underwent a turmoil of emotions while filming it.
“All us went through the same experience while shooting the film. And I’m not shy away from admitting that there were moments when we all broke down. Some of the ladies were just beyond consolation after giving their shots. I know that Shoojit and everyone who sit in front of the monitor must have been moved by the scenes. I was myself felt moved by a particular sequence in the film that I just left the sets. I just felt very embarrassed while crying in front of the ladies. (As Shoojit said – Big B went to the van). I think when you are performing such sequences, your belief is so strong that such emotions come automatically. I can guarantee that while shooting sequences wherein tears were required, we never used glycerin."
As Amitabh himself said he also experiences a sense of vulnerability -both as a father and a grandfather - each time he reads news items that talk about the atrocities that women are subjected to. “Yes, I think that’s irrespective. That goes without saying. And whether I have sons or daughters, I have always maintained to be equal in my life. And when I will die whatever little I have I will divide equally between my daughter and my son."
The film also delves into the patronizing attitude that people have towards those who belong to North East India. “When we were discussing the script, we agreed to the fact that there is a different opinion towards those who belong to North East. Hence, we decided to rope in Andrea. Those who have watched the film would know that we also discuss the same issue during a courtroom scene as well," he said.
The megastar also admitted to finding it "embarrassing" each time India is referred to as a third world country and a "land of rape". "I hate it when I go abroad and I’m told, 'You are from a third world country or you are from a developing country'. Why do they call us that? We all must work towards that and make it (India) a first world country and not a developing, but as a developed country."
