The second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri was also born on October 2. He took birth in 1904, in Mughalsarai, United Provinces, British India, now in Uttar Pradesh, India. There is a lot known about the renowned leader. From leading India to victory in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 to his slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”. His contributions to India have been innumerable. However, not many know that the most powerful man in the country once took a loan just to purchase a car.

Punjab National Bank (PNB) loaned ₹ 5,000 to the country’s most powerful man and got it all back. The loan was taken for a Fiat car. The image of the car has now gone viral on ‘X’. A page called ‘Indian History Pics’ uploaded the page on its official handle. According to reports, the loan was taken when Shastris learnt that a new car would cost ₹ 12,000, way more than ₹ 7,000 they had in the bank. This is when the PM applied for a loan and got it the same day.

Shastri did not have any car, but his family forced him to get one. The former PM asked his secretary to find out how much a Fiat car would cost following the family’s insistence.
In an earlier report, Shastri’s son recalled that after the loan was sanctioned so promptly, the PM called the officer and asked if he did the same with other applicants as well.

Shastri passed away soon after in Tashkent before he could repay his loan. The remaining debt, however, was repaid by Shashti’s wife from the family pension.
