Breaking his silence, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said there was a conspiracy behind the mid day meal tragedy in a Chhapra school and alleged BJP and RJD had a "secret understanding" to derive political mileage from the incident.
"The Forensic Science Laboratory, which highlights the presence of pesticide in the mid day meal, has confirmed our apprehensions about a conspiracy behind the mid day meal tragedy at a school in Saran last week", Kumar was quoted by state Janata Dal (U) spokesman Rajeev Ranjan as telling a meeting of party MPs, MLAs and office-bearers as part of Mission 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The Chief Minister charged "an understanding between BJP and RJD was very much visible both after Bodhgaya blasts and Chhapra midday meal tragedy" as the two parties had called bandhs on the same after the two incidents.
The Bihar government has already formed an eight-member team to probe into the mid day meal tragedy which took place in Chhapra. Twenty-three children, of a government primary school, lost their lives after eating a mid day meal served to them. Blood samples of four children, who are in critical condition, were sent to Mumbai in order to carry forward the investigations.
The incident took place last week as the children fell ill within minutes after eating a meal of rice and potato curry in their one-room school. They were vomiting and convulsing with stomach cramps - symptoms that experts say would be common in poisoning with such a toxic chemical.
An initial forensic investigation found that the Bihar children's meal had been prepared with cooking oil that contained monocrotophos - a substance that belongs to a family of chemicals called organophosphates that share a common mechanism of toxic action.
