New Delhi: A deeply divided government is now ready to push for an ordinance on Food Security in Cabinet on Wednesday. This despite strong opposition coming in from key ally and NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Food Minister KV Thomas.
But an ordinance is being seen as the only way out as the Congress is getting ready for a possible pullout by the SP soon. The Congress is getting prepared for a possible early election - maybe by the end of 2013.
The government says roll out of the Bill will take at least three months and so it needs time. The Congress doesn't want to accept amendments pushed by other parties which could delay passage of Bill in Monsoon Session.
The government had placed the Bill for passage in Budget Session but the House didn't run and so couldn't take it up.
The BJP reacting to the government's move said, "Let them bring the ordinance first. We will react tomorrow. They should wait for the Parliament session. The Congress in a hurry because it doesn't know whether it's government will stay till monsoon session. The BJP in favour of discussion on Food Security," said party spokesperson Shahnawaz Husain.
