Google has revealed information about a new Android spyware named Lipizzan, which is capable of tracking and withdrawing an Android user’s SMS messages, emails, location, media and voice calls. Google has found references in the two-stage spyware, linked to a cyber arms company called Equus Technologies. The spyware spread through channels like Google Play in the form of “Backup" or “Cleaner" apps. The spyware was able to root the device and withdraw data from it after a second “license verification" stage was given an approval by the user.
Once in control, the Lipizzan virus was able to take photos from the device’s camera, take screenshots, monitor location, steal files and information (including contacts, SMS, call logs and more) and record audio from the device’s microphone. The spyware could also record voice calls made by the user. Google was able to gain control of the situation in time by blocking the developers and the apps responsible for spreading the spyware. Google has reported only 20 Lipizzan apps, distributed to less than 100 Android devices, which it has now removed from altogether.
