New Delhi: After announcing earlier this year that it will provide Windows 10 upgrades to PCs running the pirated versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, but keep their status non-genuine and unsupported; Microsoft is now shying away from its own promise of providing the new OS update for free.
Microsoft had announced the ‘free strategy’ in a bid to make the OS available on as many devices as possible and then trying to make up for lost revenue by selling valuable services such as Office over the internet, or cloud.
However, in its latest blog, Microsoft said that only Genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free and will continue to receive ongoing Windows innovation and security updates for free, for the supported lifetime of that device.
In cases where the devices do not run the genuine version of the ubiquitous Windows software, Microsoft will create a desktop watermark to notify the user.
The company reiterated that it will provide non-genuine Windows users with the latest Windows 10 OS, but will keep them in the non-genuine state.
In partnership with its OEM partners, Microsoft said that it is planning some Windows 10 upgrade offers for customers running older devices in Non-Genuine state.
The anticipated software is scheduled for a summer release in 190 countries and 111 languages. Major changes to the Windows 10 OS include the new Microsoft Edge browser that replaces the age-old Internet explorer and seven different versions to suit the mobile age.
