BANGALORE: The High Court on Wednesday ordered an emergent notice to principal secretary of Home Department, DGP and city police commissioner in connection with a petition field by Karnataka Bars and Restaurants Working Women Welfare Association. The petitioners sought action to prevent the police from interfering with their work, as they were not being allowed to enter their work premises. In their submission, the petitioners stated that despite the earlier orders from the court and former police commissioner, to extend the bar timings till 11.30 pm, the police were not allowing them to resume their duties from many months. Stating that the police was permitting only hi-tech discotheques to employ women as bartenders, the petitioners submitted that this amounts to discrimination and violation of Article 14 of the Indian Constitution. The petitioners also submitted that police action also was a violation of Article 19 (1) (g)- Freedom to Work and Article 21 Right to Livelihood. The vacation bench of the High Court Justice Anand Byrareddy ordered emergent notice to principal secretary of the Home Department, DGP, city police commissioner and Inspector of Police in Upparpet Police station and adjourned the matter for further hearing.
