TIRUCHY: The CPM was against any independent, international enquiry into the allegations of war crimes against the Sri Lankan government during the military offensive against the LTTE, party’s central committee le-ader T K Rangarajan on Sunday said. Favouring an enquiry by the government itself, he said, “A credible enquiry should be conducted into the atrocities. Sri Lanka is a sovereign nation and a friend of India.” To a query on the party’s stand on the demand for a separate Tamil Eelam, he said, “We have always supported a unified Sri Lanka with equal rights for all citizens.”When asked whether the CPM, claiming to be a Marxist-Leninist party, had abandoned the principle of self-determination rights for nationalities, he said a decision should not be imposed on the Sri Lankan people fro-m outside. It was for the people of the island to decide. When asked whether people’s wish should be ascertained from a referendum, he rejected it.
