CHENNAI: A seaman attached to Singapore-flagged commercial liner MV Prabhu Daya, which is suspected to have collided with a fishing vessel off the Alappuzha coast in Kerala, killing three fishermen a week ago, was arrested on Thursday. The latest development came after a high-level police team from Kerala, including IGP, Ernakulam Range, K Padmakumar, Alappuzha Deputy SP K Mahesh Kumar, who is the investigating officer, and Ernakulam ACP Sunil Jacob, conducted extensive investigations on board the ship over the last four to five days. The officers questioned the vessel’s captain Perera Carten and 24 crew and examined records and documents pertaining to the navigation of the ship, anchored outside the harbour here. Mayur was brought to the shore around 7.30 pm.Identifying the arrested seaman as Mayur Virendra Kumar (25), a native of Gujarat, Padmakumar told Express that it was Mayur, “who had been directing the ship at the time of the collision”.“We have brought him from to the shore and we are in the process of completing all formalities to take him back to Kerala, possibly by today itself,” he said.
