Guwahati: The banned ULFA outfit killed 40 people, mostly Hindi speaking, in Assam's Tinsukia district on Saturday.

Assam government had requested the Centre to beef up security in trains running to and from Asom so that passengers from the state were not targeted elsewhere.

Expressing grief over the incident Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar spoke to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He expressed concern about the security of Bihari labourers in Assam.

The militants attacked remote village Ghuramora, under Sadiya police station, early in the morning on Saturday and gunned down the workers.

UNI quoted Nitish as saying, ''I talked to Assam Chief Minister Mr Tarun Gogoi today over telephone to express my deep concern over the incident in the state killing Biharis living there. He had assured me to take necessary steps in providing security to them.''

The incident has sparked off tension in the area with people tense that it could lead to large-scale communal violence.

On Friday, five gunmen had come in a three-wheeler and fired indiscriminately at the workers. Police said it was a case of extortion and the operation was pre-meditated.
