Deepika Padukone is celebrating her 38th birthday today, January 5. She has spent roughly 17 years building an impressive career. Beyond Bollywood, she has carved a distinctive place in the global entertainment industry. Her accomplishments include being named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2018 and receiving the Time 100 Impact Award last year. In 2020, she became Louis Vuitton’s first-ever Indian brand ambassador, followed by making history as the initial Indian brand ambassador for luxury jewellery brand Cartier two years later. Here is a look back at her early life and how she rose to the top.

Early life

Deepika Padukone was born on 5 January 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her father, Prakash Padukone, is a former World Number 1 badminton player. Her mother Ujjala is a former travel agent and her younger sister, Anisha, is a professional golfer. Anisha is also the CEO of LiveLoveLaugh, a charitable trust that works for the cause of mental health awareness. It was founded by Deepika Padukone in 2015.

Deepika Padukone married actor Ranveer Singh in November 2018 in Lake Como, Italy after dating for over five years.

Deepika Padukone attended Bangalore’s Sophia High School and Mount Carmel College. As a teenager, she played badminton and reached state-level championships, but left the sport to pursue modelling.

In a 2004 interview with The Times of India, she said, “I used to play badminton till Class 10 and even reached the state level championships, but one day, I realised that I was playing the game only because it ran in the family. So, I asked my father if I could give up the game and he wasn’t upset at all. He has always told my sister and I to do what we are whole heartedly interested in and to do it well.”

Journey In The Entertainment Industry

In 2004, Padukone started modelling under the mentorship of Bangalore-based fashion stylist, Prasad Bidapa. She soon bagged major campaigns for Kingfisher and Liril.

In 2006, she featured in the music video of Himesh Reshammiya’s song Naam Hai Tera from his super hit album Aap Ka Suroor. The same year she made her acting debut with the Kannada film Aishwarya, directed by Indrajit Lankesh.

Next year she starred in Om Shanti Om, alongside Shah Rukh Khan in a double role. Om Shanti Om became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2007 and propelled her into Bollywood.

Her next big project was the 2009 film Chandni Chowk to China. The high-budget film was co-produced by Warner Bros. Though it was a box office flop, it earned Deepika Padukone high praise for her action sequences.

Over the years, Deepika Padukone has done more than 40 films. Some of her career’s biggest hits are Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani, and Padmaavat. She made her Hollywood debut with the 2017 film XXX: Return of Xander Cage, opposite Vin Diesel.

This year she starred in hits like Pathaan and Jawaan, alongside her long-time co-star Shah Rukh Khan. Next year she will appear in Fighter, Singham Again, and Kalki 2898 AD.
