Bollywood films had, earlier, villains that dominated the screens. During the 60s and 70s, the villains or antagonists in films gained almost the same fame as the protagonists. One such antagonist was yesteryear actress Bindu. She was well-known for perfectly depicting villainous roles. Bindu made the audience resent her with her believable portrayal of the vamp on screen. In old interviews, she had opened about dealing with the negative side of stardom, and what she experienced as a result of it. She had mentioned, “I was confused whether being an actor was going to help me or lose.” As her fame increased after working in films like Amar Prem, Ittefaq, Dastaan, and Do Raaste, fans were more than eager to meet her. That was not it, according to more reports, some of them even expressed their wish to marry her; and sent her letters citing the same. They used to line up outside her house, in hopes of getting a glimpse of Bindu. This scared her so much that she even avoided going to the balcony of her home.
Bindu once opened up about these experiences at The Kapil Sharma Show, saying, “My fans would always write to me and they would write what they had in mind in a letter.” She spoke further, “A fan once wrote in a letter, ‘Bindu ji I stand outside the balcony for you every day but you are never seen there. I want to marry you. If you come to the balcony, I’ll assume you’re ready to marry me.’ After this, she naturally avoided going to her balcony at all, that too for several months.”
Bindu made her film debut with the movie Anpadh, in 1962. After that she was seen in Ittefaq, and Do Raaste, both 1969 releases that proved to be superhits. In 1970, she was seen in Kati Patang, where she captured hearts with her moves with the song Mera Naam Shabnam, which is considered a Bollywood classic.
